Thai PM Orders Deportation of Israeli Man After Sending Threats to Koh Samui Zoo Owner, First to be Deported under New, Easier Regulations

Thailand –

Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has signed an order to deport Mr. Yaacov Ohayon, an Israeli citizen, following his conviction by the Koh Samui Provincial Court for criminal intimidation under Section 392 of the Thai Penal Code.

The case stemmed from Mr. Ohayon reportedly sending threatening messages that caused the victim to fear for their safety. The court found him guilty of intimidation, sentencing him to one month in prison and a fine of 10,000 baht. Due to his confession, the penalty was reduced by half under Section 78, resulting in 15 days’ imprisonment and a 5,000 baht fine. The prison term was suspended for two years.

Despite the suspended sentence, authorities deemed his conduct harmful to public order and morality. The Interior Ministry cited Section 5 of the Deportation Act of 1956 and related regulations, concluding that his actions warranted removal from the kingdom to safeguard public peace and welfare.

Under Thai law, Mr. Ohayon retains the right to appeal the deportation order. He may petition the Prime Minister within seven days to revoke or suspend the decision, as provided in Section 8 of the Deportation Act.
