Bangkok –
Thai royalists staged a rally at Lumphini Park in Bangkok yesterday, October 27, to display their loyalty and support to the country’s royal institution following ongoing protests by young pro-democracy activists that have been demanding multiple changes to the country including the nation’s highest institution.
The rally was organized one day after a pro-democracy march to the German Embassy to put pressure on the embassy around the King’s frequent stays in the country and other controversial points.
The crowd was seen wearing yellow shirts and enthusiastically cheered “Long Live the King” while waving Thai flags, which symbolized the nation, religion, and the king, and raising portraits of King Maha Vajiralongkorn and his beloved late father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
The stage also featured speeches given by ultra-royalist representatives which principally involved their love of the royal institution as well as condemnation against three former leaders of Future Forward Party – Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, Piyabutr Saengkanokkul, and Pannika Wanich – as they believed that the members were provoking young students and activists to reform Thailand’s highest institution.
Contrary to the pro-democracy protests, many of the demonstrators yesterday were older in their 50s or 60s who strongly believed that the country’s monarchy is the most powerful institution and the criticism against it is disgracefully radical and taboo.
Royalist rally leader Taya Teepsuwan told the Associated Press that the gathering was fundamentally meant to peacefully show love and support towards His Majesty the King and the royal families and did not intend to confront the pro-democracy demonstrations.
“We will be the people who have taken a stand that we do not agree with the pro-democracy protests which have been denouncing the royal institution. We will jointly protect the nation’s highest institutions to remain in Thailand forever,” Taya added.
