The Thai government aims to repeal the Emergency Decree after the New Year and implement a new amendment from the Communicable Disease Control Act instead, said Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul today.
The minister today, December 22nd, told the Thai press that a proposal of the implementation of the new Communicable Disease Act was mentioned at the Cabinet meeting today. It is an adapted amendment to create flexibility and meet the needs of Thai people, by increasing the authority of the Disease Control Committee in issuing various measures including approving budgets for local and state quarantines during the new outbreak.
The Emergency Decree extension was implemented for 45 days, from November 18th to January 15th, 2021. The Communicable Disease Act will be replaced if the New Year situation nationwide is stable, according to Anutin.
When being asked about the suspension of the New Year countdown festival nationwide, the Minister stressed that the government will need about 7 days to monitor and consider whether to allow New Year’s activities or not. Chonburi, which includes Pattaya, has already made the difficult decision to cancel their new years celebration, despite no cases of Covid-19 in the province for many months.
