The Thai Cabinet today, January 5th, has given a green light regarding an additional budget for supplying 35 million additional doses of Covid-19 vaccinations to meet the requirements of the population of 66 million people.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O’Cha revealed after the online cabinet meeting that the Ministry of Public Health was ordered to procure more batches of Covid-19 vaccines, which will receive the first lot of 80 thousand doses at the end of March, approximately for four hundred thousand people.

About 1 million doses more for five hundred thousand people will be available at the end of April and another 26 million doses for another 13 million people will be available in May, according to the Prime Minister.

The first group for injection will be medical officials who are at high-risk or in close contact with Covid-19 infected patients and a group of the elderly. All vaccines must pass the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards of Thailand and of foreign countries before being used.

Prayut further stated that more batches of 35 million additional vaccines has been ordered from AstraZeneca, which will be sufficient for 66 million people. Thailand is also going to produce its own vaccine under a technology-sharing agreement between Oxford-AstraZeneca and Siam Bioscience for 200 million doses a year, which is sufficient for the entire population.

“I want Thai people to be safe but the most important thing now is to potentially control the spread of Covid-19 as soon as possible and bring sick people into treatment under a safe condition to prevent further infection. All medical supplies and drugs we have at the moment are sufficient for treating all Covid-19 infected patients,” Prayut stated.
