Public Health Minister addresses concerns over possible delay on AstraZeneca vaccine import and distribution in Thailand

Bangkok –

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul revealed to the press yesterday, January 29th, 2021, that there were some complications within the British vaccine company AstraZeneca prior to the Covid-19 vaccination distribution in Thailand.

The Minister mentioned that the major problem was a registration dispute between AstraZeneca and the European Union as the EU had limited the numbers of export of the vaccination and both parties are currently in discussion to lift some restrictions, according to the Minister. Anutin also stressed that this problem had not been created by Thailand and was not the fault of any Thai officials.

Anutin stated to the press: “The problem that occurred was beyond our control. However, we are now contacting another source of vaccination production and will ask them to send some of their supplies to Thailand before June.”

Anutin did not clarify who the other source was during the briefing.

When being asked about potential distribution delays, the Minister stressed that the vaccination will be scheduled to be ready for public use in June, if the plan was acted in accordance with the order from AstraZeneca.

The Pattaya News noted that, according to the Public Health Ministry’s earlier statement, the first batch of Covid-19 vaccination from AstraZeneca will arrive not later than May. However, it seems that the AstraZeneca vaccination will not be able to be distributed in the country until June.

Prior to this, the AstraZeneca vaccine was already approved for emergency use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last week. However, the FDA will have to conduct a random examination of each batch before they can be distributed in Thailand.
