Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang today, February 4th, announced the cancellation of the Chinese New Year festival at Yaowarat road, as known as Chinatown, this year to prevent the spread of Covid-19 Coronavirus in which the number of infections has not seemingly decreased nationally, although has seen significant improvement in many provinces.
Chinese New Year in Bangkok is staged annually in February with plenty of local street food, events, and performances along Yaowarat and Charoen Krung Road. The 2021 New Year festival was previously planned to be organized on February 12th.
The cancellation order was also acted accordingly to a Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) suggestion, particularly not to stage a big eventful gathering in the capital just yet in order to avoid the reoccurrence of another ‘cluster’ in the country.
A four-day-long holiday weekend is still ongoing despite the event cancellation. However, the CCSA advised Thai people to virtually celebrate the New Year festival with their family at home and not to travel to other areas.
