Thailand and Chinese officials celebrate Chinese New Year, mark first time the day is a holiday in Thailand

Thailand-

Thai and Chinese officials marked 46 years of diplomatic relations with each other this weekend at a ceremony to celebrate and mark the Chinese New Year in Bangkok at the Thai Tourism Authority Head Office.

The ceremony was led by Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, and H.E. Mr. Yang Xin, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to Thailand.

The ceremony also included prominent government officials from both China and Thailand to mark the “Year of the Ox” and wish health, prosperity, and happiness for residents of both countries.

Thailand has been organizing Chinese New Year festivals for the past sixteen years, this year was the first time the day has been a national holiday in Thailand. Despite the holiday, due to Covid-19 measures and precautions in parts of the country, the number of people estimated to travel or participate in events was expected to be significantly lower than the year before. Additionally, foreign tourists are still not allowed to visit Thailand due to border restrictions unless they go through two-week quarantines and other measures.
