An enormous phallus which was built on a road as a part of an ancient local rain-making ceremony in Chachoengsao is breaking under the heat of the sun and rain.
Local villagers in the Yothaka sub-district of the Chachoengsao province on June 9th built an enormous phallus on a dead-end rarely used road as a part of a local rain-making ceremony. We covered it here which had substantial interest from readers.
Then, the structure, which was built as a part of an ancient local rain-making ceremony in Chachoengsao going back decades brought rain two days after, according to the village headman. This followed villagers praying at the landmark.
A local resident, Mr. Somphong Poethong, 49, told associated Thai press, “Although the statue and ceremony has helped to bring rain to the area there was still not enough water for our rice fields compared to recent previous years.”
“Due to continued rain and environmental damage the enormous phallus has started to break and fracture. It will be soon destroyed by the sun and rain but not before completing the ceremonial purpose of bringing more rain.”
The unique religious practice has been in place for generations and locals truly believe it helps symbol fertility and brings rainfall to the farming communities nearby that rely on rain for their livelihoods.The ceremony has driven intense discussion and even some ridicule online. However, the villagers have dismissed this criticism, pointing to the fact that the ceremony has taken place for around a hundred years and has blessed those in the local community with rainfall for decades.
