Bangkok –

Representatives of night-time business sectors yesterday, June 16th, urged the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) to speed up the easing measures of night-time business reopening by July 1st and to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages in all restaurants.

Deputy leader of the Democrat Party Prin Phannichphak, as a leader of the Modern Business Group, along with representatives from the night entertainment industry, musicians, fitness business sectors, and event organizers has submitted a petition to General Natthapol Nakphanich, Chief of the National Security Council, at the Government House to allow them to reopen next month after they have been financially hit by three waves of Covid-19 in Thailand for more than 200 days over the last year.

Prin stated that as a group of night business industry, entertainment venues, and freelancers had been suffering from the government’s Covid-19 preventive measures, he then invited the representatives of the business group to discuss and share their opinions constructively to make government measures fairer to all parties.

According to The Rock Pub owner Nonthadech Buraphasitthiporn, the proposal included (1.) the revocation of closing entertainment venues order, only high-risk venues should be closed for big cleaning and disease investigation; (2.) the revocation of closing all night-time business and entertainment venues within July 1st, however, they must still strictly following the preventive orders of the Department of Disease Control; (3.) the relaxation of alcoholic beverages sales for consumption in restaurants as there is no indication that drinking alcohol is the cause of the infection; (4.) the relaxation of organizing entertainment in a closed space by arranging seats according to social distancing rules; (5.) the allocation of vaccinations for entrepreneurs, service providers, and people involved in night business industries along with tourism businesses; (6.) the clarification of financial remedies, debt moratorium, and a low-interest loan to maintain business liquidity; (7.) the estrablishment of communication channels between the government and business sectors to listen to their opinions and discuss the people’s needs before implementing any preventive measures; (8.) the CCSA should discuss with the Ministry of Labor to relax salaries payment for employees in the case that the employers have to temporarily reduce the salary of employees to maintain the liquidity of the business instead of laying off.

National Security Council chief Natthapol said that the CCSA is well aware of the problems of entrepreneurs. However, the currently implementing government measures were thoroughly considered and approved by all relevant ministries with the same goal to relieve the Covid-19 situation in Thailand.

“However, the CCSA is ready to listen to everyone’s problems and will try our best to discuss remedy measures fairly to minimize the problems while solving the Covid-19 domestic situation,” he concluded.

TPN notes that as current Covid-19 closure measures stretch on with no end in sight and limited financial aid pressure on the government to either open the sector or provide financial aid has dramatically increased. Entertainment venues have been closed nationally for just over two months.

The CCSA is planning to discuss some of these issues tomorrow but there is no guarantee any measures will be eased.
