Thai Office of Insurance Commission warns people with Covid-19 insurance not to deliberately infect themselves for insurance claims following rumors on social media

Bangkok –

The Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) has warned people who have reportedly intentionally infected themselves with the Covid-19 Coronavirus for health insurance claims that they are violating the law.

Suthiphon Thaveechaiyagarn, secretary-general of the OIC, stated that the Department was alerted of a new crime where Covid-19 insurees were persuaded to have themselves at risk of contracting Covid-19 in order to receive an insurance claim. Doing so can be life-threatening and the money may not be guaranteed under the Covid-19 insurance policy as they may not meet the conditions and may be accused of insurance fraud as well.

The secretary-general told the press: “There are rumors spreading on social media that such behaviors were encouraged by some private individuals during the third wave of the Covid-19 outbreak. If they were confirmed to be true, this would surely aggravate the current situation of the epidemic and significantly affect the legitimate exercise of the insurees who were honesty infected by the disease.”

“If anyone was found to have actually committed an offense, serious legal procedures will be conducted. The OIC would also like to advise insurance companies to be cautious when accepting Covid-19 insurance. The Thai General Insurance Association will be invited to the Department to discuss the issue as soon as possible.” The secretary-general concluded.

This followed talk on social media in which claims of people going out of their way to contract Covid-19, such as using masks used by those with the virus or deliberately meeting people who were positive for the disease without protection in order to be infected for insurance claims were rampant.
