Saraburi, Thailand-
Thailand’s police commando team today, July 7th, announced the arrest of an alleged group of organized scammers that reportedly tricked the Thai public into a non-existent Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine purchase.
Weerasak Suksamdaeng, 26, was captured in the Kaeng Khoi District following the Udon Thani Provincial Court’s arrest warrant on charges of joining to commit fraud and importing forged data into a computer system.
The arrest took place following complaints reported at Muang Udon Thani Police Station, stating that a group of scammers who claimed to be doctors had created a discussion group in the LINE social application called “Vaccine Sinopharm” to trick people to purchase a Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine, claiming that they were overstocked from the Federation of Thai Industries from the recent Chulabhorn Royal College’s order.
About 20 victims complained at the Muang Udon Thani Police Station who were convinced by the scammers that they were doctors and had agreed to transfer thousands of baht to reserve the vaccine and “jump the queue”. However, they did not receive the vaccination as scheduled, according to victims’ statements, and the scammers vanished after the money was sent.
Last Friday, July 2nd, another one of the gang members, who was not named by the Royal Thai Police, was arrested in the Mueang Saraburi district. He allegedly confessed that he became jobless during the Covid-19 pandemic and decided to form a LINE group to gain credibility by claiming to be a doctor before deceiving several local people who wanted alternative vaccinations to transfer money. More than 200 victims had agreed to pay for the non-existent vaccine, making a total of 360,000 baht. This particular individual reportedly cooperated with police on identifying other suspects.
Weerasak, who was detained at the Mueang Saraburi police station, was reportedly responsible for managing bank accounts. However, he denied all the charges and has claimed he is completely innocent. He remains in police custody as of press time pending a further investigation. It is unknown if Weerasak has secured a lawyer at this time.
