Happy Mother’s Day and Happy Birthday to The Queen Mother from The Pattaya News/TPN National

Thailand –

Every August 12th has marked Mother’s day in Thailand as it is the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother, who is also regarded as the mother of all Thai people.

The day has been considered a national holiday and celebrated annually nationwide since 1976 during the reign of His Majesty King Bhumibol, Rama 9. This year marks her 89th birthday.

To celebrate Mother’s Day in Thailand, Thai people will wear blue, The Queen Mother’s color. Public places and government offices are mostly adorned with The Queen Mother’s personal flag and the portrait of The Queen Mother as it is their way of expressing their loyalty and honor.

Traditionally, young children would offer their mothers jasmine flowers which symbolize motherhood and unconditional love. A Mother’s Day ceremony would also be organized at schools and institutions for their students to pay respect to their mothers.

Some families will reunite and take their elderly mothers for dinner. It is also usually a perfect occasion for everyone in the family to meet and enjoy their time together.

Unfortunately, this year, due to the Covid-19 situation in Thailand, such outings and public ceremonies are discouraged and people, especially in 29 maximum control provinces, are being asked to “Stay Home”. Restaurants in maximum control provinces are also closed for dine-in, normally a major day for eating out. Regardless, many people plan to mark the day online and give their regards and blessings to their families digitally.

From the staff of The Pattaya News and TPN National Long live the Queen Mother, Happy Birthday, and Happy Mother’s Day.
