Pongsakorn Paeyo wins Thailand’s first gold medal at Tokyo Paralympics wheelchair race on Sunday

Thai wheelchair racer Pongsakorn “Korn” Paeyo won the gold medal after winning the men’s 400m T53 wheelchair race at the Tokyo Paralympics on Sunday, August 29th.

Pongsakorn also reached the finish line with a new Paralympic record of 46.61, marking Thailand’s first gold medal and the fourth medal of the Thai athletes in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.

Pichet Krungget, the other Thai wheelchair racer who also joined the same competition, finished in fifth place with a record of 49.96.

Pongsakorn will participate in another two race programs this week; 100m T53 on Wednesday and 800m T53 on the following day.

So far, Thailand has won one gold medal, one silver, and three bronzes since the first day of the Paralympics on August 24th.

Another Thai wheelchair racer Athiwat Paeng-nuea won a silver medal in T54 400m wheelchair race on the same day, crossing the finish line at 45.73 which was only 0.01 seconds behind USA’s Daniel Romanchuk.

Thai wheelchair fencer Saysunee Jana claimed the first medal of Thailand last Thursday in the bronze medal match of the women’s epee individual category B event.

Another two bronze medals were won by Para Table tennis player Rungroj Thainiyom in the semifinal of the men’s singles Class 6 on Friday and racer Putaret Khongrak in the men’s 5,000 meters T54 wheelchair race on Saturday.
