Khon Kaen –

An American suspect originally from Colorado who was under Thai police custody for allegedly raping and assaulting a masseuse in late September has reportedly confessed to all allegations to Khon Kaen police today, October 4th, and investigators are opposed to any bail at this point of the investigation, believing the suspect would be a flight risk.

37-year old suspect Robert Andrew Gordon was arrested after a five-day search at a Bangkok condominium on Saturday, October 2nd, after reportedly attacking and raping a 45-year-old massage therapist at a massage shop on September 27th. He was transferred back to Khon Kaen yesterday for detention while an additional twelve-day detention request was proposed to the Thai courts.

Mr. Gordon is also facing charges involving an incident of allegedly exposing himself and attempting to force himself onto a young, underage girl the same day who was selling honey at a streetside stall. Mr. Gordon is claiming, so far, that he was under the influence of illegal drugs, primarily speed, which caused him to commit his actions.

Police Colonel Preecha Kengsarikit, chief of the Mueang Khon Kaen station, revealed to the associated Thai press today that Mr. Gordon was so far facing three charges, including physical assault, rape, and illegal detention. The police have submitted a twelve-day further detention request and bail objection as the suspect is a foreign national and they believe that if he was granted bail he would attempt to flee Thailand. Colonel Preecha noted that additional charges relating to Mr. Gordon’s alleged actions were likely forthcoming.

Mr. Gordon reportedly admitted to all the allegations during the investigation, the chief stated, although as noted has blamed illegal drugs for his behavior and appears to be claiming he was not in the right state of mind when the incidents occurred. Mr. Gordon stated that he had been staying in Khon Kaen province about two months ago and the cause of this incident began when he had an argument with his wife in Amnat Charoen after she caught him communicating with another woman.

He furiously left the house and drove to Khon Kaen where he reportedly quarreled and created chaos at a first massage shop in Mueang district. He then arrived at the second massage shop on the following day when he asked for massage service and met the victim, a 45-year-old woman. The alleged incident with the underage minor took place the same day in the afternoon following the prior incidents.

“The initial investigation and interrogation have been concluded at this point. The suspect had been cooperative with the Thai authorities throughout the process. He was detained and sent to the court for the legal process to request further twelve-day detention for courts to begin to review the overall cases and charges,” Preecha added.

TPN media notes that despite officials stating the suspect was being cooperative he was widely reported yesterday refusing a re-enactment of the crime, normally required by Thai law, citing concerns for his safety.

Meanwhile, the health condition of the 45-year-old masseuse had improved but she was still unable to communicate or provide any details to the officials. She is reportedly on a ventilator and remains under hospital care.

Mr. Gordon remains in detention at a jail in Khon Kaen, pending court decisions on his further detention request by Thai police. TPN media will continue to provide updates on this story as they become available.
