Thai Meteorological Department warns of flash floods due to heavy rains in most parts of Thailand this weekend

  The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) today, May 19th, announced a weather warning of heavy to very heavy rains in upper Thailand and the South that may cause flash floods from May 20th to the 23rd.

According to the announcement, a strong southwest monsoon is prevailing over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand while an active low cell over the Gulf of Martaban will pass Myanmar to the upper North and the upper Northeast.

This results in the forecast of thundershowers and strong winds in all areas of the country with isolated heavy to very heavy rains in the North, the Northeast, the Central, the East, Bangkok and vicinity, and the South.

The affected areas are as followings:

20 May 2022

North: Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Phrae, Sukhothai, Phichit, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Kamphaeng Phet, and Tak.

Northeast: Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Nakhon Phanom, Chaiyaphum, and Nakhon Ratchasima.

Central: Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chainat, Kanchanaburi, Suphan Buri, and Ratchaburi, including Bangkok and its vicinity.

East: Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi, Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat.

Meanwhile, the wind and waves over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf will strengthen to 2-3 meters high in the Andaman Sea and above to 3 meters in thundershowers while about 1-2 meters high are expected in the upper Gulf and the lower Andaman Sea, and above 2 meters high in thundershowers.

All small ships should proceed with caution and keep at the shore during thundershowers. People should beware of severe conditions that may cause flash floods. All transport should take more caution during the warning. Farmers should prepare for and help prevent crop damage.
