Prisoners involved in marijuana offenses would be released after the official marijuana legalization (in part, recreational smoking or over 0.2 THC is still illegal) on June 9th, the Thai Court of Justice’s spokesperson said today, June 4th, 2022.

Mr. Sorawit Limparangsee, a Court of Justice spokesperson, stated today, June 4th, that the accused pending trial and detention in marijuana plant offenses will be dismissed, according to the document published on https://ratchakitcha2.soc.go.th/ regarding the legalization of the production, import, export, sell, possession, and consumption of the marijuana plant on June 9th.

The accused who have given surety will get it back, and those who are currently imprisoned, which is not much, for such an offense will be released, the spokesperson said.

In the meantime, the court will issue a release warrant but also allow the defendant’s relatives to file a petition to the court as well, according to the spokesperson. He affirmed that the process would be quick although cautioned that some cases may have additional charges and complications that could not be immediately resolved. Foreign prisoners serving any time for marijuana offenses were not specifically referred to in Mr. Sorawit’s statement.
