Two Indian women were arrested at Suvannabhumi Airport on Sunday, June 26th, for reportedly attempting to smuggle live wild animals in their luggage before heading back to their home country.
Sathon Khong-ngern, chief of the wildlife checkpoint at Suvarnabhumi, told the Associated Press that the suspicious objects were found when their two suitcases were being x-rayed at the checkpoint.
According to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, several species of live animals, namely two white porcupines, two armadillos, 35 turtles, 50 lizards, and 20 snakes, were discovered when the officials began the examination.
The luggage owners, who were later identified as Nithya Raja, 38, and Zakia Sulthana Ebrahim, 24, were initially charged with violations of the Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act, the Animal Epidemics Act, and the Customs Act. The suspects were detained at Suvarnabhumi airport police station for legal proceedings.
The suspects did not speak to the press or release a statement regarding their alleged actions.
