Royal Thai Navy to purchase drones for coastal aviation worth 4.1 billion baht

The Royal Thai Navy today, July 1st, announced the purchase of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), or drones, for coastal aviation bases with a budget of 4.1 billion baht.

Karnakorn Monthatpalin, a spokesman for the Royal Thai Navy, told the Associated Press that the department would make a purchase of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or drones from Israeli contracted company Elbit Systems Ltd. with a total amount of 120 million USD or 4,004,652,000.00 baht.

The purchased drones would be delivered and stationed at the Naval aviation base of the Royal Thai Navy in the Ban Chang district of Rayong.

“We are in the process of drafting the contract. The committee would draft the contract before proposing it to the Naval Commander for approval. Then, the signing steps would be conducted between the contracting parties, namely the Navy, Elbit Systems Ltd., and the National Anti-Corruption Committee (NACC),” Karnakorn added.

Meanwhile, local media reported that Myanmar military planes reportedly intruded Thai airspace on Thursday, June 30th, due to the fight between Karen National Union soldiers and the National Unity Government Forces in Myawaddy province.

The media reported that Myanmar soldiers sent fighter jets to the Thai airspace for about 15 minutes. Myanmar has since apologized for the incident which has driven significant discussion on Thai social media.
