40-year-old man in Phuket identified as person of concern for monkeypox, although doctors initially believe he may have chickenpox instead

Phuket –

A 40-year-old Thai man has conducted a blood test after he was flagged as a person of concern for monkeypox due to reportedly suspicious symptoms. Doctors initially believe, however, he might have been infected with chicken pox instead of monkey pox.

The Director of the Vachira Phuket Hospital Doctor Weerasak Lorthongkam told the Phuket Express, “The 40-year-old Thai patient is now at the Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket Town. The man does not have any history related to the Nigerian man. In fact, this particular man is mostly a homebody, doesn’t work in the tourism industry or go to any high-risk entertainment or service venues and just stays home with his family.”

“At this stage, doctors believed he might have been infected with chicken pox instead of monkey pox. However, his blood is being tested to be positive. He is now being quarantined at our hospital. Please don’t panic.” Weerasak stated.

The patient was not identified for his own privacy but was described as a 40-year-old Thai national and Phuket resident who reported to a hospital with symptoms that appeared similar to a pox. He does not, however, have swollen lymph nodes, doctor’s stated.

The results of testing would be available within a few days, Weerasak stated, and the patient was being cooperative while in quarantine.

TPN notes this is much more cooperative than Thailand’s first case of monkeypox which was a Nigerian man who fled to Cambodia illegally and was promptly arrested. He remains in Cambodia getting medical treatment as of press time.
