Here is a look at the top NATIONAL stories, chosen by our Pattaya News/TPN National team, from last week, July 25th to the 31st, with some commentary. They are not in any particular level of importance but are listed in the order of date of publication.

1. Thailand’s second Monkeypox patient confirmed in Bangkok

The latest confirmed patient, who is likely not to be connected to the first Nigerian patient, was a Thai man from Bangkok who previously had a history of homosexual sexual practices with a foreigner. He is still being treated at the hospital in the capital under close observation of medical personnel and Public Health officials. Meanwhile, the authorities are investigating close contacts of the patients, including the foreigner who reportedly had sexual practices with the patient.

2. Thai Public Health Ministry withdraws its order for Thai Police to arrest cannabis sellers without proper permit

Public Health Minister’s sudden announcement to the Royal Thai Police was drawn back in less than 24 hours. It granted the authorities to conduct immediate legal prosecutions against cannabis researchers, sellers, exporters, and processors who are not holding legal licenses. However, the letter was withdrawn, reasoning by the Public Health that it needed thorough reconsideration and to be clarified for better mutual understanding among the public.

3. Nok Air flight skids off runway in Chiang Rai, no injuries but flight cancellations and delays

The frightening incident occurred on Saturday night which caused the closure of Chiang Rai International Airport for at least three days to remove the airplane and clear the runway for safety. All of the 164 passengers and 6 crew members onboard were not reportedly injured. Despite the accident caused by heavy rain during the landing, the airplane pilot would be summoned for questioning about the incident as well as an explanation of why they did not allow passengers to evacuate until an hour later after the accident.
