Bangkok launches food waste separation campaign, piloting in three busiest districts, to reduce waste in the city

Bangkok –

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt on Sunday, September 4th, launched a campaign for people to separate food waste in the first three piloting districts of Phaya Thai, Pathumwan, and Nong Khaem with an aim of reducing waste in the city.

The Governor and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) hosted the press conference to launch the “Mai-Tae-Raum” separate food waste project at Lumpini park this afternoon.

The project aims to create a prototype to complete the waste separation system at the district levels city-wide. Today’s event also presents a new type of garbage collecting truck with additional food waste storage to potentially separate food waste from general waste.

Chadchart stated that separating food waste was something people had been talking about for a long time as it would make general waste to be able to be recycled and reused more conveniently. Many people also separated the waste but the city’s garbage collectors eventually put them together when picking them up from the people’s houses, so some people did not separate them anymore.

He said: “It’s time for us to start the whole process with collaboration from all departments. The first step is to have people separate waste, then the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration collects waste separately, and the last step is a systematic waste management system.”

“In the past, we’ve spent more than ten billion baht on waste management while we’ve spent four billion baht on education. We spent a lot of money on garbage. Today, we have to think about how to turn trash into assets. It can be done gradually by doing a pilot campaign first in three districts namely Pathumwan, Phayathai, and Nong Khaem to see if the model works out or not. If yes, then the project would expand in other districts.”
