The Cabinet committee on Tuesday, September 13th, approved of an increase of the daily minimum wage by 5.02 percent nationwide, effective on October 1st.
The proposal was submitted to the cabinet committee by Ministry of Labour. Following the approval, the new rate would be at an average rate of 337 baht while the highest rate would be applying in Chonburi and Phuket.
The lowest rate would be at 328 baht applying in Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, Nan, and Udon Thani while the new rate in Bangkok and its vicinity would at 353 baht.
Labour Minister Suchart Chomklin told the Associated Press that the minimum wage had to rise for the first time in two years following the inflation in the country and the economic situation around the world.
The Minister said: “I’d like to inform the public that the increasing wage is a part of the mechanism. As for the increase of money interests or energy prices, the government attempted to solve the problem by reducing the cost of living to assist the people as much as possible.”
“And the reason why the Ministry decided to implement the new hike on October 1st was because prices of necessity goods were already increasing. If the rise was implemented next year, the prices would go up once again. Therefore, wages must be raised as quickly as possible in order to be in line with the prices of products and services in the country.” The minister concluded.
