Timber Cutters Arrested in Reserved Forest in Chiang Mai

8 Thai men were apprehended while illegally felling trees in the reserved forest of Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, on June 11th.

The alleged illegal timber cutters were arrested by police for the prevention and suppression of crime against natural resources and the environment. They were found while felling trees in the Chom Thong National Reserved Forest in Chiang Mai.

The men had chainsaws, seven machetes, and three barrels of gasoline in their possession. Chiang Mai Police stated that the suspects had been hired by investors to encroach upon the forest reserve areas, which are actually given to local villagers with legal certification from the Department of Forestry, to use.

The police said the men selectively cut down valuable timbers, causing damage to an area of nearly 3 acres. They were taken to the Chom Thong Police Station for further legal proceedings.
