A Phuket man was arrested after admitting that he sold the personal information of 2,000,000 people to scammers.
Colonel Thapakorn Hanumart of the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau told the Phuket Express that on Friday morning (July 14th) they arrested a man identified only as Mr. Padungkiet, 28. The arrest came after the Phuket Provincial Court had issued an arrest warrant for Mr. Padungkiet.
He was arrested in Trang and taken back to Phuket. Police seized mobile phones, computers, bank books, and various other items from him.
Padungkiet admitted to officers that he had graduated from a university with a major in computer engineering and since managed online gambling websites, which are illegal in Thailand. After that, he bought and stole personal information from his online gambling customers, in a total of 2,000,000 people for only about 8,000 baht. He sold this information to scammers online and he was receiving about 50,000 baht per month for this information.
Padungkiet is facing charges of fraud by circulating fake online information causing security breaches to national security and individuals , persuading others to join gambling sites, and revealing personal information to others.
He remains in custody as of press time.
