Thailand’s House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha has postponed the Prime Ministerial voting originally slated for tomorrow, August 4th, 2023.
The postponement came after the Constitutional Court on Thursday, August 4th, decided to defer the reviewing of a petition to determine the constitutional validity of the Parliament’s decision to reject the renomination of Pita Limjaroenrat, leader of the Move Forward Party (MFP).
The petition was filed by the Office of the Omsbudsman with a request to delay the PM voting until the verdict on the issue is reached.
According to Wan Noor, the PM voting will take place after the Constitutional Court’s decision on August 16. Thus, tommorrow’s meeting, which was supposed to be the nomination of Pheu Thai PM candidate Srettha Thavisin, will now turn into a deliberation on the MFP’s charter amendment bill to remove the Senate’s power to vote for a prime minister instead.
Following the postponement, the Pheu Thai Party has also postponed its press conference to declare a new Pheu Thai-led coalition scheduled for today after the party disbanded from the previous Move Forward-led coalition.
This announcement will likely take place a few days before the next PM voting date, according to Pheu Thai leadership.
