Thailand yesterday secured their first Asian senior women’s volleyball championship since 2013, beating China in an intense five-set match in Nakhon Ratchasima. The Korat Chatchai Hall was packed with 5,000 enthusiastic fans.
The final score was 25-21, 25-27, 25-19, 20-25, 16-14.
The top scorer for Thailand was Chatchu-On Moksri with an impressive 23 points, including 21 attacks, one block, and one ace. Ajcharaporn Kongyot and Thatdao Nuekjang added 22 and 16 points, respectively. China’s Wu Mingjie contributed 22 points.
The Thai team, led by Ajcharaporn’s relentless attacks, initially took the lead at 8-6. Despite China’s strong comeback, a powerful spike from Chatchu-On secured the first set.
With a 1-0 lead, Thailand played with increased confidence in the second set. Despite China’s impressive comeback, Thailand’s strategic adjustments and determined play helped them regain control.
In the deciding set, both teams fought fiercely. Thailand’s determination ultimately made the difference as they secured a 16-14 victory.
Ranked 14th globally, Thailand reached the final by defeating five-time champion Japan 3-2 in the semifinals. China, with 13 Asian championship titles, secured their first final appearance since 2015.
Thailand’s prior Asian championship victories were in 2009 against China and in 2013 with an upset victory over Japan, both in Nakhon Ratchasima.
