Deadly Confrontation at Chiang Rai Border: Thai Rangers Seize 200,000 Amphetamine Pills in Drug Smuggling Operation

On November 12th, 2023, Pha Muang Army officers launched an inspection on a shooting scene between drug smugglers and Thai rangers at Mae Fah Luang, Chiang Rai. There were 200,000 amphetamine pills confiscated and one drug smuggler was killed during a firefight between officers and the suspects, said officials.

According to the report from Pha Muang Army, the investigative officers received information that there was drug smuggling from a neighboring country to the border of Thailand. The Thai rangers then patrolled the reported area.


At 9:00 PM, on November 11th, 2023, the rangers spotted a suspicious group of 4-5 people with luggage and unidentified firearms. The rangers then asked the alleged drug smugglers for inspection before the shooting occurred which lasted for 5 minutes.

After the shooting, the rangers enclosed the area, until in the morning, one drug smuggler was found dead with two left-behind bags stashed full of amphetamine with over 200,000 units.

Initially, the Mae Fah Luang investigative officers confiscated the property in dispute and pledged to take the involved individuals in custody for further legal proceedings.
