At 08:37 AM, on November 17th, 2023, an earthquake occurred with its epicenter in Myanmar measuring 6.4 in magnitude.
The tremors were felt in Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Lampang, Nan, and Bangkok. The affected area was about 100 kilometers northwest of Mae Sai, Chiang Rai.
In Bangkok, many tall buildings reportedly experienced shaking particularly in Thung Song Hong, Lak Si. Desks trembled, furniture swayed, and there were reports of dizziness.
CCTV footage from Nong Bua School in Mueang Chiang Rai, Chiang Rai, showed students feeling the tremors. Within a few minutes, the shaking intensified, causing desks and chairs to move. When the tremors reached 6.4 in magnitude, everyone in the room automatically crouched down and took cover under desks without any prior instructions, in line with the annual earthquake response drills.
Furthermore, the Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital discovered a crack in the plaster connecting the new and old buildings. The Chiang Rai governor had reportedly instructed the construction team to urgently inspect the building as there were many patients, doctors, and nurses in the facility.
According to the report from Mae Sai rescue teams, Mr. Yahuai, a 31-year-old Myanmar worker, was reportedly on a third-floor scaffolding. The tremors caused him to fall, resulting in his left arm breaking in a serious condition. Following the incident, rescue teams rushed him to the Mae Sai Hospital for treatment.
Additionally, other places like Mae Sai Hospital suffered minor damage at the front of the building.
