At 8:30 AM, on November 22nd, 2023, Khon San police officers received a report of a mentally ill man riding a motorcycle with a possible weapon into the Ban Nam Phu Hin Lad School in which 100 students attended in Khon San, Chaiyaphum.
Khon San police officers rushed to the incident scene, however, the mentally ill man had fled to his residence. After about an hour of persuasion and negotiation, the police officers were able to successfully take the suspect into custody.
According to the report from the Khon San police officers, the suspect was intoxicated and affected by an illicit drug substance. An unidentified relative of the suspect stated to the police officers that the suspect held a record as a psychiatric patient and had discontinued the treatment for a month.
Initially, the police officers escorted the suspect, whose name was withheld, to a local hospital for treatment. Luckily, only one teacher suffered a minor injury from the incident.
After the incident, Chaiyaphum Provincial Social Development and Human Security Agency performed a field inspection to evaluate the mental health of the children and teachers involved in this incident.
Furthermore, relevant agencies would create a precautionary plan to prevent similar incidents with government officials in every school across Thailand.
