Thai Excise Department Eyes Alcohol Tax Reduction to Boost Tourism and Consumption

National—

On December 18th, 2023, Mr. Lawan Saengsanit, the Director-General of the Revenue Department, publicly revealed the Thai Excise Department scrutinizing reducing the alcohol tax structure appropriately to support Thailand’s tourism sector.

Initially, the conclusion would be made and presented to the next cabinet meeting due at the end of December 2023 and it is expected to be effective within January 2024.

The alcohol tax reduction will potentially support Thailand’s consumption and tourism sectors to grow efficiently, said Lawan.

Furthermore, local alcoholic beverages made by local communities would also be included in the alcohol tax reduction. With lower prices of alcoholic beverages and good cuisine, foreign tourists would have a good impression while visiting Thailand as a heaven on earth where they can travel, eat, and drink to their heart’s content, added Lawan.

Apart from reducing alcohol tax in the long term, the Thai Ministry of Finance officials seek to invest in various fields of growing business in the future, concluded Lawan.
