Fatal Accident in Samut Prakan: Company Bus Plunges Into Canal, 3 Dead, 22 Injured

On February 3rd, 2024, Samut Prakan local media gave an update on a recent accident involving a company bus carrying more than 20 passengers that lost control and plunged into a canal on 200-years Rattanakosin Road, Bang Bo, Samut Prakan.

Samut Prakan rescue teams and locals broke the bus windows and rescued all surviving passengers outside the overturned bus in a canal. The wounded passengers were assisted with first aid before being transferred to a nearby hospital.

The rescue teams found two deceased bodies stuck inside the bus and retrieved them and one person was later pronounced deceased at a local hospital. As a result, there were 22 injuries and 3 casualties reported.

The police closed traffic and a crane was deployed to lift the bus for rescue teams to urgently search for victims.

Mr. Atthaphon Saibut, a 23-year-old witness, told the rescue teams that the company bus was speeding over a bridge crossing the canal, furthermore, the bridge was narrow and had no streetlights. The bus then collided with a side barrier and plunged into the canal.

Mr. Rung Phromsart, a former village headman in the area, told the rescue teams that this road had been under construction for more than two years and was quite dark, especially the bridges across the canal. Rung asked relevant agencies to provide a source of light to prevent repetitive accidents as previously a taxi plunged into a canal, claiming one life.

Initially, the police would investigate the case and interrogate the bus driver and witnesses to determine the exact cause of the accident.
