At 12:00 PM, on February 6th, 2024, Mr. Srettha Thavisin, the Thai Prime Minister, gave a statement after the Thai cabinet meeting on a study of an amnesty for unregistered firearm possessors to surrender to the Thai government in a to-be-determined timeframe without any fear of legal penalties.
Srettha issued The Thai Ministry of Interior an order regarding public safety from gun crime. The study of gun control measures was to reduce the number of guns that could potentially cause violence to the public and domestically.
However, the new gun control measures must not cause any conflict with current relevant laws and would be issued by Royal Decree before the amnesty is enforced.
After the new gun control measures were officially executed, unregistered firearm possessors may surrender their weapons to the Thai government and would not be held accountable.
Furthermore, Srettha stated that there was a government discussion on issuing gun measures to limit access to unregistered firearms by people in general.
