Update: Thai Probation Department Decides Against Electronic Monitoring for Thaksin Shinawatra, Citing Illness and Age

National—

On February 13th, 2024, Mr. Rueangsak Suwaree, the Director-General of the Probation Department, publicly revealed that the decision regarding whether Thaksin Shinawatra should wear an electronic monitor (EM) during his probation was based on established criteria of being seriously ill, disabled, or over the age of 70.

Rueangsak clarified that according to the criteria of having a serious illness and being aged 74, Thaksin’s status and the nature of the offense did not necessitate the use of the EM. This decision underscored the department’s commitment to applying probation measures appropriately, taking into account individual circumstances, said Rueangsak.

Probation officers played a crucial role in ensuring Thaksin’s compliance with the probation terms. Within three days of receiving the probation penalty, Thaksin was required to report to the probation officers in person. However, in case Thaksin is unable to do so due to health reasons, probation officers shall visit the address provided by his patron, according to Rueangsak.

When Mr. Thaksin completes his six-month probation period, he will be free from penalties by August 2024, stated Rueangsak.

Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Thaksin’s daughter, reportedly made preparations for his accommodation, “Chan Song La” Manor, during the probation period.

As of press time, it was not officially determined what the exact date and time of Thaksin’s release would be.
