The inclusion of Bangkok, Khon Kaen and Yala in 2024 adds to seven existing destinations in Thailand.
Bangkok, 19 February 2024 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is delighted to announce that Bangkok, Khon Kaen, and Yala have joined the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC), a recognition for cities with outstanding efforts to make lifelong learning a reality for all at the local level.
The three Thai cities are among 64 new members from 35 countries announced on 14 February 2024 during a high-level virtual event “Empowering Learners of All Ages: UNESCO Learning Cities Transform Lives”.
Pol Gen Permpoon Chidchob, Thailand’s Minister of Education, said being a member of the UNESCO GNLC would offer an opportunity for Thailand to be part of a dynamic network and receive guidance and support for developing learning cities as well as be able to participate in a range of activities.
“Thailand can also present its candidature to host international or regional conferences, while being eligible for the biannual UNESCO Learning City Award,” said Minister Pernpoon, who is also Chair of the Thai National Commission for UNESCO.
With the 2024 inclusions, Thailand now has 10 cities in the UNESCO GNLC. The seven existing cities are Chiang Rai (since 2019); Chiang Mai, Phuket and Chacheongsao (since 2020), and Sukhothai, Phayao and Hat Yai (since 2022).
