National—

On February 28th, 2024, the Thai cabinet unanimously approved the principles outlined in the Protection and Promotion of the Ways of Life of Ethnic Groups Act, using the Cabinet’s proposal as the primary framework.

Mr. Padipat Suntiphada, the First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives of Thailand, presided over the meeting where the Cabinet’s proposal and four other drafts with similar content were considered.

The central focus was on affirming the state’s commitment to supporting the protection and promotion of the diverse ways of life of Thai citizens from various ethnic groups. The aim was to ensure that individuals can live in society according to their respective cultures, traditions, and original ways of life without disruption, as long as it does not disturb public order or morals.

Throughout the discussion, members of parliament from all parties expressed their unanimous support for the draft laws. They emphasized the need for legislation that safeguards the rights of indigenous peoples, ensures their recognition and equal rights, prevents violations against ethnic groups, and upholds human rights.

The Act also aims to address several key points, such as preventing conflicting land use in areas not designated for public use by the government, prohibiting discrimination, integrating ethnic groups into political and social processes at all levels, and guaranteeing welfare rights and basic entitlements equal to those in urban areas.
