Bangkok Standoff Ends: Man with Firearm Surrenders After Threatening to Jump from District Office

Bangkok—

At 9:00 AM, on March 21st, 2024, Tha Kham police officers received a report of a person with a firearm threatening to jump from the fourth floor of the Bang Khun Thian District Office, Rama 2 Road, Bangkok.

On the fourth floor of the District Office, a man, publicly identified only as Mr. Prawit, a 33-year-old food seller, was leaning against a wall. Tha Kham police attempted to negotiate with the man, however, the man refused.

The Tha Kham police contacted Prawit’s wife to calm him down and after a two-hour negotiation, Prawit agreed to cooperate with the police. Prawit was taken into custody and escorted to Tha Kham police station.

Upon the police investigation, Prawit and his wife previously had arguments. Prawit then sent a photo of a firearm to threaten his wife, causing her to be afraid. The police were notified of Prawit’s behavior and tracked down Prawit.

However, Prawit attempted to flee the police pursuit and went into hiding inside the Bang Khun Thian District Office. Prawit went to the rooftop with a firearm that was later found hidden inside a brush nearby, according to the police.

Initially, Prawit was taken to a hospital for a mental health examination. If he was found suffering from mental illness, his wife would take him into treatment processing, according to Thai national media.
