At 10:00 AM, on April 9th, 2024, Mr. Srettha Thavisin, the Thai Prime Minister, and relevant agencies held an urgent meeting regarding a Myanmar commercial aircraft landing at Mae Sot Airport, Tak.
Srettha publicly revealed the unsettling situation in Myanmar could greatly affect Thailand. In cooperation between the two nations according to Myanmar policies for peace and stability, it was necessary to work together for people’s benefit.
The urgent meeting with relevant agencies was to build peace and stability in Myanmar as soon as possible. Meanwhile, the Thai government would provide humanitarian assistance to those affected and diligently monitor possible impacts on Thailand in many aspects including border trading, said Srettha.
A government working group would be established under the supervision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a collaboration with the Secretary-General of the Security Office. The working group was assigned to support the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on political, social, and economic issues between Thailand and Myanmar, remarked Srettha.
After the sitting of the senate, Thai senators expressed their concern and care for the civil war in Myanmar as it would potentially affect the rights and freedoms of the people and Thailand as well. The discussion was on the topic of Myanmar nationals seeking refuge in Thailand as a result of the ongoing unsettling situation, reported Thai national media.
It was reported that the senators proposed to the Thai government to assign a government official unit to manage refugees and establishment of shelters, according to Thai national media.
