1. Protection of Life and Property: Prime Minister Srettha emphasized the importance of safeguarding lives and property on the island. This commitment extends to both Thai citizens and foreign residents and tourists.
2. The “Phuket Model”: To enhance tourism and enforce strict law and order, authorities are developing the comprehensive “Phuket Model.” This multifaceted approach includes several safety measures:
– Accident Prevention: Efforts will focus on minimizing road and marine accidents.
– Fire Protection: Protocols will be strengthened to ensure fire safety.
– Business Licensing: All businesses operating in Phuket must adhere to licensing regulations.
– Driving Licenses: Foreign riders and drivers will be required to hold valid driving licenses. This includes rental agencies who have been under strict scrutiny over the past several days, notes The Phuket Express, and faces the possibility of extremely high fines if they allow foreign nationals to rent vehicles without proper licenses. The tourists will also be penalized with fines and even the possibility of jail time for driving without a license, officials have added.
3. Bangla in Patong: Recognizing that Bangla in Patong attracts a significant number of foreign tourists, authorities are committed to eliminating illegal drug-related activities and violence. Urgent upgrades are planned for the Bangla Police box and the Patong Station. This comes after a number of high profile crime incidents in the area involving both Thais and foreign nationals.

The island has had a number of incidents that have gone viral, many involving foreigners, that have driven attention to it in recent months. The most famous of these involved an ongoing dispute between a Swiss expat and a Thai doctor whom the expat allegedly literally kicked while accusing her of being on his property. She was later found to be on public beach land, noted officials. The case continues legal proceedings as of press time.
