On April 23rd, 2024, Thai social media users posted a video of a pedestrian being hit by a taxi while legally crossing the road at a crosswalk in front of Asiatique The Riverfront, Bang Kho Laem, Bangkok.
In response to the viral video of the accident, Wat Phraya Krai police officers publicly revealed the case details that the officers received via an accident report at 1:36 PM, on April 20th.
The emergency services and police officers were dispatched to the accident scene and found a taxi driver, publicly identified only as Mr. Patsathi, 58, and a victim, publicly identified only as Mr. Thanat, 44.
According to the police report, The taxi driver reportedly told the police that he was headed outbound on the Charoen Krung road and drove past the crosswalk light in front of Asiatique The Riverfront. As a result, Thanat, the pedestrian, was directly hit by the taxi and was injured.
The video showed a dozen pedestrians waiting to cross the road. Thai netizens criticized the Thai laws against road traffic violators saying that the punishment was too light causing nobody to strictly follow the traffic laws, noted TPN.
Emergency services reportedly transferred Thanat to a nearby hospital for immediate medical treatment. The police then collected evidence from local CCTV for further legal processing.
Initially, the taxi driver reportedly confessed his wrongdoings before being recorded in a daily diary as evidence. The police were in the process of waiting for the body examination of the victim, who was safe, from the physicians as evidence to the case before taking legal action against the taxi driver.
