Fatal Accident in Bangkok: Man Falls into Deep Electrical Hole, Sparks Concern Over Safety Measures

Bangkok—

At 9:40 AM, on May 3rd, 2024, Chokchai police officers received a report of a man accidentally falling into an electrical conduit/well while crossing a road near Soi Lat Phrao 49, Lat Phrao, Bangkok.

According to the police report, a man, whose identity was still under investigation by relevant police, fell into an electrical conduit that was over 10 meters deep at a traffic island under an elevated electric Yellow Line train. The rescue teams and relevant agencies were dispatched to the accident scene to rescue the man urgently.

It was reported that the cover of the electrical conduit was made from plywood which was in a tattered condition. This area reportedly had Bangkok water trucks frequently watering plants at the traffic island which might have been the cause of the plywood cover to be tattered, local officials told The Pattaya News.

It was reported that the electric conduit in the Lat Phrao area was under the supervision of the Thai Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA).

At 12:00 PM, the rescue teams were able to bring the man out of the conduit. Unfortunately, it was not in time to save the man’s life.

Inside the conduit, there was 2-meters of stagnant water with pieces of plywood. The body was found floating on his back and he was initially assumed to be dead from drowning, according to the rescue team.

Mr. Apidej Rueanma, a witness, told the police that the man was crossing the road until he arrived at the traffic island and suddenly fell into the electrical conduit. Apidej then reportedly called the police and relevant agencies to rescue the man.

Initially, the Chokchai police would investigate the case to determine the man’s identity and contact his family and relatives for further religious ceremonies.

Thai netizens asked for an immediate response from relevant agencies as the conduit’s cover should have been a steel cover instead of plywood, noted TPN.
