Family of Bangkok Electrical Conduit Fall Victim Seeks 10 Million Baht in Compensation

At 11:30 AM, on May 4th, 2024, Thai national media reported that the family and relatives of a male victim who fell into an electrical conduit in Bangkok decided to file a lawsuit for 10 million baht in compensation from the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA).

Previously, a man, publicly identified only as Mr. Kamthorn, fell into an electrical conduit over 10 meters deep at a traffic island under an elevated electric Yellow Line train while crossing a road near Soi Lat Phrao 49, Lat Phrao, Bangkok, claiming his life.

According to Thai national media, Kamthorn’s relatives told the public that they received apologies from the Bangkok government and MEA. Various agencies also contacted the victim’s relatives for compensation for the loss of one’s life.

The victim’s relatives told Thai national media that they demanded full responsibility as unfinished construction projects must be properly secured not just using plywood covers or fragile materials. The incident should not have occurred if the relevant agencies had properly done their jobs according to legal standards.

The MEA stated that thieves were stealing steel covers and that is why they used plywood covers. The victim’s relatives retorted to the statement that they should have installed CCTV as it was under the national budget and MEA was a large organization that should have full accountability and responsibility.

The victim’s relatives further added that Kamthorn used to take care of his two older sisters who were ill and old. Nothing could compensate for one’s life.

According to Thai national media, the family and relatives of the victim decided to sue the MEA for 10 million baht.

Recently, the MEA proceeded to take immediate action to temporarily close all underground electrical conduits with cement covers. Furthermore, the MEA also instructed the contractor to carry out work neatly and be careful of dangers that may affect any pedestrians.

All electrical conduits would be thoroughly inspected with comprehensive protection measures.

However, the MEA reportedly would take strict legal action against those who stole the steel cover and coordinated with police officers and relevant agencies to inspect the Bangkok metropolitan area.
