Thai Commerce Minister to Boost Thai Soft Power in Tokyo, Japan

On May 9th, 2024, Mr. Wittaya Maneenet, the spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce, publicly revealed the itinerary of Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce to promote Thai soft power in Tokyo, Japan.

According to the Ministry of Commerce spokesman, Phumtham and relevant agencies would officially visit Japan to promote Thai soft power and products to the Japanese market including Rakuten, Muji, and KALDI. The Thai government sought Thai SMEs to expand their businesses abroad.

The itinerary was scheduled from May 11th to 12th for the 24th Thai Festival Tokyo event in Tokyo. Thai products and foods would be presented as a Thai identity at the event. Moreover, the Thai famous series Y was also widely considered a popular television drama and one of Thailand’s soft powers.

Additionally, Phumtham would meet with Mr. Kazunori Takeda, the Vice President of Rakuten Company, a well-known online shopping platform in Japan, and sign an MOU to promote international trade on Thai products, according to the Ministry of Commerce spokesman.

A discussion with Muji and KALDI representatives would also be held to promote Thai products and foods in the Japanese market, especially Thai Bananas which would be exported and set for sales at Japanese supermarkets per proactive marketing policies by Phumtham, remarked the Ministry of Commerce spokesman.
