Public health Anutin Charnvirakul revealed today, March 14th, that the Thai government is planning to purchase 5 million additional doses of Sinovac’s Covid-19 vaccines to potentially help control the local transmission of the virus in the country.

Anutin told reporters while inspecting the Covid-19 situation at Sirisethanon market in the Bang Khae District of Bangkok this morning that an additional 800,000 doses of the Sinovac vaccine will be arriving in Thailand in March and 1,000,000 more in April.

Moreover, the government is also negotiating with the Sinovac company to buy an additional 5,000,000 doses, which was according to the minister essential in order to help prevent the pandemic situation and the further spread of the disease.

He further stated that the main vaccines being used in Thailand are from the AstraZeneca company, which will be ready for injection in late May or early June. Meanwhile, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will start Covid-19 inoculation by tomorrow for people with underlying health conditions.

Anutin told the Associated Press: “From now until the end of the year, we will never have to say that ‘we are out of vaccines’ again. We still don’t need to buy a whole lot, but we can start by managing what we have now.”

“In the meantime, we urge Thai people to stay calm and remain cautious after a sudden surge in Covid-19 cases in Bangkok’s Bangkhae district yesterday,” Anutin concluded.
