Thailand-
Speaking at a press conference this afternoon the Thai Minister of Public Health, Anutin Charnvirakul, stated that all provincial governors would be given the authority to declare curfews to control Covid-19 if they felt it was needed for their province.
Anutin was responding to questions around increased measures to control a recent outbreak of Covid-19 in Thailand that has seen the country hit record numbers of cases in recent days, although the majority of cases according to the Ministry are 18-29 year olds and are asymptomatic or mild. The current outbreak comes primarily from entertainment venues that started in the Bangkok area, according to the Ministry.
Anutin stated that there would be no national curfew but pointed to the example of Samut Sakhon, which had previous outbreaks in their markets in December and January, for individual curfew measures. That province instituted a curfew for just the province from 10:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. to assist in controlling the outbreak.
Anutin stressed that each individual governor would be given the freedom to declare a curfew if they felt it was needed to control the virus in their province, but again stated there would not be an overarching national curfew that would affect every resident in the country like last year.
A detailed announcement on the new restrictions around Covid-19 is expected around 4:00 P.M. today with a live press conference in English and Thai.
