Bangkok –
Entertainment business operators on Khao San Road are being warned to control their volume within 15 days after many residents’ complaints.
The Deputy City Clerk from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) Mr. Suksan Kitthisuphakorn made the ultimatum about lowering volume yesterday (February 8th) in a meeting with business operators on Khao San Road and representatives from nearby local communities.
Mr. Suksan said at the meeting, “We have received about 15 complaints since October last year until last month about loud noise from Khao San Road. We need cooperation from business operators to control the volume within 15 days.”
The rules announced were:
- Businesses which play music or live music SHOULD be in closed buildings which can prevent loud noise and vibration to the outside.
2. The average volume MUST not be more than 90 decibels, maximum volume must not reach more than 110 decibels and volume reaching to nearby communities MUST not be more than 10 decibels.
3. Volume MUST be turned off or turned down multiple times a night to give a break for listeners for their health and hearing.
4. Loudspeakers are BANNED outside venues to prevent disturbances.
- Sound level meters MUST be installed with screens showing the current noise results for customers and officials to know.
“If after 15 days, any operators have not modified their venues following the above rules, legal action will be taken.” Suksan concluded.
