Former Thai PM Thaksin Set to Return Home Tuesday Morning

Thailand’s former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has confirmed his return to arrive in Thailand on August 22nd, 2023, the same day as the scheduled Prime Minister vote.

Mr. Thaksin told the BBC Thai media before leaving Dubai “I will be definitely arriving in Thailand around 9:00 A.M. on August 22nd and will not postpone anymore.”

He said his return date this time does not relate to the next prime ministerial vote date and claims it isn’t political. He had reportedly already planned his return before the prime ministerial vote date was set.

Parliament speaker Wan Muhammad Noor Matha has yet to decide the final date for the next round of Thailand’s prime ministerial vote pending the Thai charter court’s ruling on the ombudsmen’s petition.

“Many people told me that August 22nd is a lucky day. I did not believe them but just wanted them to love each other for peace. I did not choose to return on August 21st as it will be my daughter Paetongtarn’s birthday.”

“I am very old, I miss my family, I want to be with them.” Mr. Thaksin noted.

Meanwhile, Thai authorities are planning to meet Thaksin at the Don Mueang Airport, escort him to the Thai Supreme Court and then a prison to face his numerous legal charges relating to his previous time in Thailand.

At the same time, many of Thaksin’s supporters have camped out at the airport this evening and plan to welcome him tomorrow morning, August 22nd, 2023.
